Japan to Test Disaster Mitigation System Using Satellite

16 January 2019 07:48 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government of Japan has started to establish a trial run of its disaster early warning system in the Asia-Pacific region using a satellite. The test has been running in India and Papua Nugini.

The project aimed at expanding its contribution for other Asian countries in the attempt of disaster mitigation, “and potential impacts of natural disasters on Japanese manufacturers' production and supply chains,” the Asian Disaster Reduction Center told Mainichi, January 13, 2019.

One of Japan's four Michibiki global positioning system satellites will be employed to relay information from several institutions that are monitoring weather conditions.

The Japanese government, in tandem with ADRC and domestic corporates as well as a number of universities, has developed a receiver that will be distributed to local authorities.

Japan Today media reports that the experiment has been done in Japan to test the reciprocal data transmission. Besides functioning to send an early warning, the system has been used to connect computers in a simulation of evacuation shelter and a disaster response center.

According to experts, the satellite system is effective to ease the evacuation process and manage the relief activity post the disaster in remote areas.
